This summer our Minds Inspired High School Scholars travelled to Oxford University in England for a taste of uni life at the Oxford Academy. Jade Wilkinson, Cristin Jackson, Anja van Genderen, Ethan Slocock and Emma Turnbull spent two weeks immersed in academic, cultural and social activities with other students from around the world.
The primary objectives of the Academy are to give scholars insight into their areas of study and a taste of what the university lifestyle is like. The Minds Inspired Scholars found the Academy experience extremely valuable and will use it to prepare for their time in university. The scholars stayed in the heart of Oxford’s campus at the St. Thomas’, St. George and Lampl dormitories, where third year Oxford students live during term time.
The scholars attended two hours of lectures in their areas of interest each day. Anja, Emma and Cristin participated in the Young Doctors track, Ethan took part in the Computer Science track and Jade chose the Psychology track. After lectures, they joined together for masterclasses on the life skills needed for university.
All five scholars had lots of fun touring London and were able to truly take in the British culture. They watched Romeo and Juliet at the famous Globe Theater, visited Windsor Castle and attended a formal ball among many other activities.
“Emma had a great time in Oxford, so much so that it has helped shape her desire to be a surgeon because she especially loved the “surgery” part of the academy. Thank you so much for this opportunity”, said Emma’s mom, Lindsey.
We wish all of our scholars the best for the upcoming school year!
